Swimming Lessons/Clubs

Swim with Us

Here at the National Sports Centre, we want to be sure our swimmers are safe when in and around the pool. We offer a great program to prepare our swimmers for the water. Initially, all swimmers will learn safety skills in and around the water, then later are taught basic stroke technique such as freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. All lessons are one-on-one for 30 minutes. We teach all ages starting around 2 years old and up!

Harbour Swim Club

Harbour swim club is the oldest and largest swim club in Bermuda. Formed in 1974 and celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, it continues to go from strength to strength, working with each child to maximize their own ability and help them reach their individual objectives.  We work to develop swimmers from the junior age, through competitive seniors and finally helping many to represent Bermuda internationally at both the age group and national levels. Additionally, Harbour has several club members who have earned scholarships to swim collegiately.

The club currently has a membership of approximately 170 swimmers based locally and overseas, with over ten different squads to accommodate all levels and age groups. Harbour has 12 experienced coaches led by our Head Coach, Shona Palmer, a former GB squad member who represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Games.

Success in swimming comes from hard work, technical excellence, mental toughness and being focused in practice, that often translates to up to nine sessions a week for our most competitive senior squad swimmers, and over fifteen hours of training. It also requires regular competition both here in Bermuda and on the international stage as they continue their development and grow as athletes and young adults.

Harbour’s programmes are producing outstanding swimmers who are currently competing overseas at age group and senior levels including the following competitions:

  • The Caribbean Free Trade Association Games (CARIFTA).
  • The Central American and Caribbean Confederation Swimming

Championships (CCCAN).

  • The PANAM Games
  • The Commonwealth Games
  • World Swimming Championships and ultimately we hope the Olympic Games.

There are clearly numerous benefits, that range from acquiring the discipline as a way of life, viewing the sport as a lifestyle choice that help them remain fit and healthy in their day to day lives, whether they compete locally or internationally.

Sharks Swim Club

Sharks Swim Club is a competitive swim club within a fun and positive environment. Our swimmers range from our little Puppy Sharks through to our Elite Senior Sharks; many of whom represent Bermuda in International swim meets like Carifta, CISC and CCCAN. We are very proud to have several Alumni who have represented Bermuda at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

Sharks Swim Club is led by Head Coach Ben Smith who works with an amazing team of coaches. Our coaches will help your child transition into the swim club environment and take their swimming to the next level. The success of our club is measured not only by our dominance of age group champions and elite swimmers but through the development of your child as well rounded sports men and women.

Sharks swimmers train hard, have fun and build great friendships as they progress through the program. While pool sessions are separated by levels, our land and beach training, as well as social events, promote interaction between swimmers of all levels.

We recognize the importance that the social role of the club plays. We hold many social events throughout the year, including a beach BBQ, a fun day at National Sports Centre, kids Christmas parties, awards dinners, in-house club swim meets and fundraising events such as our annual car wash. The club is based at Warwick Academy pool with long course sessions being held at National Sports Centre for senior level swimmers.

Puppy Sharks – Our beginner program. We take swimmers of any age who can complete a length of the pool.

Junior Sharks – Our juniors work on mastering the technique of all 4 strokes. Junior swimmers can be entered for BASA development meets.

Intermediate Sharks – Our intermediates work on improving their stroke technique and building stamina. Intermediates may be swimming at development meet or standard meet level.

Senior Sharks – Our senior swimmers continue to improve both technique and stamina. Our seniors swim at standard meet level and many will qualify for National Team level also.

Swimmer’s levels and abilities are frequently reviewed, allowing for progression through the groups per term.
